winchester area just west of there. let's talk though about today. we have some snow that's moving in this afternoon. and as she said a little bit of snow is what we're expecting but the timing is not going to be the greatest because it will be falling during the ride home. this morning, we've got clouds. cold temps. we're in the means in many areas -- teens in many areas now. a high in the upper 20s and anything that falls will be sticking to anything that's not treated. by 1:00 a little bit of snow mainly well west of d.c. but i think by mid-afternoon that's when the snow starts to move in. we did have some patches of clear skies overnight but the clouds really moved in. to the west now in illinois and kentucky this is where snow is reaching the ground now. so it's going to take a while but at 2:00 a winter weather advisory does go into effect for almost the entire washington metro region: winter storm warnings out out for 6 inches or more. skiers a great weekend to get out and hit the slopes. 18 winchester and 16 in fredericksburg. it's 12 in orange, virginia

right now. 18 annapolis and going up to 28 here in d.c.. monika is off today but beverly farmer is standing by with the latest timesaver traffic. and the drive is pretty good one. certainly on major arteries we are clear and dry. out of the neighborhoods, may have the potential for the refreezing just a warning to you there. both an foot and in -- on foot and if your car. travel southbound 270 out of frederick. the delays are south of here. then good out of clarksburg and jermantown to points south. maryland beltway we've been in good shape and an early morning crash on the bw parkway inside the beltway southbound is gone. water main crews though still working on kenilworth avenue. they're blocking a left lane each way until further notice. here approaching fair oaks and on into vienna and falls church. the 95 corridor any volume building at all into quantico and woodbridge is brief. into springfield and on to 395 all open for you. green and yellow rail line

commuters you have a delay near the l'enfant plaza. vice president joe biden took the campaign for gun control to the internet with an online video chat. >> today the vice president is going to hit the road and host a round table discussion about gun safety. he'll be in richmond, virginia doing that. delia goncalves is live in front of the capitol with more on what to expect out of the road tour. >> reporter: absolutely. but yesterday wasn't easy either. he fielded some really tough questions online yesterday. and certainly today he will have to defend his proposals in richmond when he visits there. the vice president says gun control measures simply are not the entire solution to gun violence in our country. but he says if et stays just -- it seays just one -- saves just worth it. of a mass shooting. lily was shot three times in

the first place -- good idea in the first place, more is coming up in the next half hour. back to you guys. >> thank you. police are now looking for the gunman who fatally shot a woman in the head. this was the scene at fifth and nicholson streets in northwest earlier this morning. investigators have not identified the victim at this point right now, police are still looking for a suspect and a motive. if you have any information please call d.c. police. two teens accused in the murder of 16-year-old marcus jones of prince george's county will be waking up behind bars this morning. they're identified as -- the news comes less than 24 hours after a community meeting looking for information on the killing of jones a friendly high school student. >> it was revealed that rival gang members were present at a birthday party in a residential home. as tensioned escalated at the party, additional gang members

arrived and three or four shots were heard. we've had different witnesses say that there was two weapons on the scene. and multiple shots. >> i'm still in shock. it's a tragedy. i know there's a -- debate in regards to gun violence. and we're looking at assault weapons and things of that nature. and i'm just aghast that handguns are part of that. -- part of that tragedy. and we're not addressing that tragedy and that's what affected friendly high school. >> prince george's county police are still on the hunt for a third suspect. they're hoping your calls and anonymous tips will help them find the last piece of the puzzle. if part of your commute brings you near the national mall, the metropolitan d.c. police want you to know there are going to be several street closures because of the march for live event that's happening today. the closures start at 9:30 this morning in some areas and they run through the whole day in other areas.

strength, efficiency and the transparency of our capital markets. >> if confirmed by congress white would be the first prosecutor to ever head the sec. she was the first female u.s. attorney in manhattan and there she prosecuted john gotti also disciples of osama bin laden for the 1998 bombing of two u.s. embassies in africa. successfully oversaw the prosecution of yusef as well. he was the mastermind behind the 1993 world trade center bombing. now the attention to wall street in the wake of the 2008 meltdown and the sec has gotten bashed for missing bernard madoff's ponzi scheme and of course the stimtoms of a financial crisis. also been a heap of criticism that there's not been enough people going to jail for all that. but there's also a wrinkle as well. for the last decade she's been in private practice and she defended companies like jp morgan chase and morgan stanley and bank of america.

still even those are saying her confirmation should be a relatively smooth one. she's going to have to recuse herself for two years for cases that would be related to the work that she's done and her husband also does legal work that could potentially be in conflict. it's a little complicated but it could probably wind up being pretty easy in the end. >> that's really interesting and i wonder if back to the other part of it how she defended the banks, i wonder if her work kept a lot of the people out of jail. which is kind of interesting. a lot of people say like martha stewart went to jail for insider trading but none of the people who leveled the economy -- >> we have not seen a single person go to jail at lehman brothers or aig. >> hopefully she's as good as defending the job. >> then there's the jetting process -- vetting process. we will find out that question mike. did the work keep the potential people out of jail? the fight over new york's jumbo soda ban is becoming a civil rights issue. >> and man's best -- i just --

morning. just cold. this afternoon, the snow will move in from early to mid- afternoon from west to east. and for the ride home, that's the concern that we'll have some snow around. although the crews are going to be out the main roads i think will be generally treated and fine. it's going sob some of those -- to be some of the back roads and sidewalks that will be so slick because it's so cold. there's not a lot of heavy snow but we're watching it coming out of the chicago area down into indianapolis right now. south of that though we're looking at a mix of snow, some sleet and then some freezing rain. southern kentucky into towards tennessee. had some icing problems there. the air that's moving into very cold. we've got single digits in williams port and look at the teens here. not just cold but some very dry air so that initial surge of moisture is likely going to be evaporating sam. the you look at -- some. if you look at radar the air is really dry. humidity only 40%.

want to get the number the dew point as close to the temperature as possible so we get more humid and they can survive the trip down. north-northwest winds at 9 this morning. talking about the weather headlines, this is the second storm on the way but another kind of wimpy storm in a sense. meteorologically speaking and that may not be a bad thing from your perspective. it arrives this afternoon. 1 to maybe 3 inches. the 3-inch totals would be richmond and southeast of there or the northwestern zone. hagerstown and western maryland you may get that and even more out in garrett county. the storm system comes down it's going to be hitting those west facing ridges especially tomorrow. and late tonight and that's going to squeeze out 6 inches or more. we have watch it it's coming our way and the snowals. just going to -- totals. just going to advance through the futurecast. this is one of the models i look at and the with snowals, about an inch in d.c..

2, 2.5 here in the northern shenandoah valley and frederick and 3 to 6 across parts of the mountains and that's just through sunday afternoon. i've seen more models that have more in garrett and preston and tucker counties. snow develops this afternoon. 28. tonight, mid teens to low 20s. no end by 9:00, 10:00. 11:00. saturday, breezy. we've got temperatures potentially cracking freezing. and then sunday, nice in the upper 30s. milder monday with a chance of a shower. high 46. tuesday, upper 50s. rain moves in tuesday night and wednesday and we cool down again on thursday. monika is off this friday but beverly farmer has got the latest update on timesaver traffic. in howard could be right now -- the good news is not much to report as far as incidents. the drive north on 95 coming from richmond fredericksburg, into quantico volume light here this friday. heaviest volume northbound travelers pace is good though into springfield and on to 395 heading up past the 14th street

welcome back. 6:22 this friday morning. a cold dry friday morning but we have a little bit of snow coming this afternoon. maybe an inch or so by the time the system pulls away later this evening. here's a look at the futurecast. the temperatures rise slowly toward the lower 20s by 9:00. we'll be in the mid 20s by noon. perhaps some light snow breaking out west. now during the mid-afternoon, here comes the snow it will be around for the evening rush hour home and that could slicken things up a bit. winter weather advisory begins at 2:00. highs in the upper 20s. mike and andrea? thank you howard. small but tough. that's how you could probably describe the salt of our next story. >> well, it's a dog that

probably saved the life of her house mate tuesday night. waking her up before she died of carbon monoxide poisoning. gary nuremberg came back with dry shoes and some teary eyes. >> reporter: able years old, still -- 8 years old and still moves like the devil but is described by owner christy williamsson -- as. >> part boston terrier, part angel. >> reporter: filling her home with carbon monoxide as she slept. kayla was breathing it too. >> miss my baby girl and she now something was wrong. and she was trying to tell her mommy to wake up. weren't you baby? and she saved my life and probably the life of many other people in my condo complex. >> reporter: she woke christy up. christy got up. weaved as she walked and fell down and called 911. >> i said i know that the answers that i gave them i kept thinking oh my god. what -- what's my address?

we are back at 6:29 and this is always the place to get your weather first. here's a live look at the u.s. capitol on a cold friday morning. it is 20 degrees. thanks for starting your day with us, i'm andrea roane. >> happy friday and we do have the best call letters ever. wusa9 meteorologist howard bernstein live on the weather terrace. probably well bundled up. good morning howard. >> good morning, yeah basically the winds are lighter or else i'd think about having a hat on. but the ear muffs and gloves and heavy coat should be part of your repertoire this morning with temperatures in many areas down in the teens and we're going to have lighter winds today and more wind tomorrow. one thing today is the dry start but some snow moving in this afternoon. could be a few flurries or light snow developing western sections by early afternoon. looks like mid-afternoon when the snow moves in toward d.c. and for the commute home upper 20s with some light snow falling. that means anything that's not

treated will see accumulating snows. but not a lot of snow. only expecting panel inch or so. see the snow that's moving in out of ohio and kentucky? the first bit of snow is likely just going to evaporate but we have winter weather advisories in effect for the metro. southern maryland down through the northern neck and central maryland as well starting at noon out to the mountains. those winter weather advisories, here's a look at temperatures before we go. it's 9 at the tappahannock airport. easton is 19. 15 in hagerstown and going into the upper 20s with some snow this afternoon. let's go over the beverly farmer here at -- to beverly farmer here at 6:30 with the latest timesaver traffic. thankfully not too much to tell about. which is great news howard. we need a break after yesterday. eastbound lanes of 66 any volume delay we see at all from haymarket to manassas, getting in towards centreville. pace still looking good into fair oaks and a little slowdown forming in falls church as the hov rules are going into effect there inside the beltway. northbound 95 travelers heading

president obama has made new gun control laws a priority of his second term and today, he's sending vice president biden on the road to get some gun friendly areas to get support for his proposals. >> not going to be an easy task. he's starting in richmond, virginia and going to be joined by tim kaine. delia goncalves is live on capitol hill with more on what they're trying to accomplish today. good morning delia. >> reporter: good morning. certainly this will be an uphill battle in rich monotoday. you can imagine the -- richmond today. the you can imagine the white house is most likely sending biden to richmond to get this hardest sell out of the way first and to also pave the way for the president. we're told president obama himself will eventually take this message on the road as well. you may be surprised but the vice president himself owns two shotguns. and he says he supports an individual's right to bear arms under the second amendment. however, biden believes there's no hunting or self-defense

reason to have assault weapons. more than 150 military style weapons would be banned under legislation introduced yesterday as well as those high capacity ammunition magazines. >> i'm much less concerned quite frankly about what you call an assault weapon than i am about magazines. and the number of rounds that can be held in a magazine. >> the message to democrats is see what your silence does? there will be more of these. these aren't going to end. >> we owe it to our constituents, and our country, to try. >> reporter: senator dianne feinstein who you heard from in that piece introduced legislation that banned yesterday -- she also introduced the first ban in 1994 that expired in 2004. this version of it, much strict -- much more strict.

however, it does not include 2,000 sporting rifles. that is not included in this firearms' ban. we're told next week, another legislation on gun trafficking will be introduced in the senate. back to you mike. andrea? >> all right. delia goncalves with that live update from capitol hill. it is 6:34. jessica doyle is back with another your money report. >> and how much you pay in taxes with filling up the gas tank that could be going up. >> that's right hiking the gas tax on the table around the country for various states. even right here in our own neck of the woods. in maryland counties could raise the tax by up to five cents a gallon. to pay for local transportation projects. yesterday in annapolis it was in a proposal. the debate in virginia has become one of the most watched in the country. governor mcconnell wants to -- mcdonnell wants to actually dump the state's gas tax. he then would replace it with a

transportation targeted increase in the state sales tax that idea is catching some heat because it would shift the burden off of drivers and onto everyone in the state. so what do you currently natoal state sales taxes throughout the washington area? in d.c., it's 23.5 cents. the same in maryland and our partners at usa record that in virginia it -- "usa today" report that in virginia it's 19.5 cents. that's on top of the 18.4 cents federal gas tax you are also paying. lots of taxes every time you fill up. for starbucks the coffee chain enjoyed hire spending in the u.s. and asia but revenues fell short of expectations after hitting a bump over the summer. starbucks has been making a new effort to draw in more cost conscious consumers and it's also been diversifying its offering. if you use twitter, you know the posting a photo has been the primary way to share an image. well that's changing. twitter has unveiled an app

called vine. that lets users embed original videos and tweets and they have to be short and tweet just like a sweet. videos are limited to six seconds or less. right now vine is available only for the iphone and the ipod touch. but they are working on other platforms. six second videos. >> yeah, there's a bunch of other sort of video sharing deals for twitter out there too. so it will be interesting to see if it works. >> vine of course is owned by twitter and it's going to be one that's promoted -- heavily. >> heavily. >> yes. >> cool. people will be vining. >> thanks jess. all right, so it's 20 degrees out. it does not feel like baseball weather. we're celebrating nats' fest which is this weekend anyway and also 18 days until pitchers and catchers report. the washington nationals owner is going to be here to talk about the upcoming season and we believe screech may be joining him. stay with us.

still. we've got 20 degrees and i have to get you -- this side, this side. 20 degrees. the dew point is 1 below so it's really, really dry with a north northwesterly wind at 9. and it feels like 9 above. futurecast got some snow on the way. so the snow is going to come this afternoon. we've got temperatures this morning which are cold enough and anything that falls is going to be on the snowy side. and by 2:30 or so, notice the snow moving in toward the metro. it will be here for the afternoon rush hour. no flying then screech. low visibilities little snow. you'll be someplace inside and warm. you'll get a chance, spring is coming. spring -- don't hurt yourself screech. we have about an inch or so of snow expected and by the time we get to 9:00 snow is already pulling away. so the weekend things are looking much better and watch it just this afternoon. there'll be some slick spots out there. here's the three day forecast. today is snow develops in the -- the snow develops in the afternoon behind screech's head boy he's got a big head. he's a big guy over here. 28 degrees. and you know i'm not a big guy. i'm a little guy.
